Industry Trends for In-licensing and
Partnering
Pharmaceutical companies and large- and mid-cap
biotech firms recognize the growing importance of working with
venture-backed companies to address the discovery and early development
components of their pipelines. For most private companies, the decisions
of who to collaborate with and how to structure such a partnership may
have more impact on the success of their company than even the FDA’s
approval of their product. Many early-stage biotech companies look to
partnership strategies to share development expenses and to monetize
both core and non-core assets. While these partnerships may alleviate
near-term cash concerns for the company, many companies overlook the
long-term consequences of the partnering terms effects and how the terms
will affect the future strategy and valuation of the company. This
plenary session will feature a roundtable discussion with pharmaceutical
and biotech executives who will share how they view their own pipeline
sustainability requirements, and opportunities to address these needs
both internally and through collaborations with other biotech firms.
They will also address the question of how large firms should build
relationships with early stage firms.
